College Counselor - Christopher Columbus High School

Christopher Columbus High School invites applications for a full-time College Counselor to guide students and their families through the college admissions process. This position will start in August 2025 and will report to the Director of College & Career Guidance. 

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

  • Advise, guide, and support students and their parents on all aspects of the college search, application, and financial aid process.
  • Communicate with students and their parents in a timely and thorough manner.
  • Conduct individual, family, small group, and class-wide meetings throughout the year.
  • Review student college applications, essays, and write individualized college letters of recommendation for admission and scholarships, summarizing each student’s high school experiences within the appropriate context. 
  • Manage the submission of required college application documents for each student, including supporting faculty in composing and submitting materials. 
  • Cultivate relationships and provide appropriate follow-up with college representatives throughout the application process.
  • Plans, publicizes, implements, and presents events, workshops, and webinars appropriate for all grade levels of students and families about important components of the application.
  • Hosts college admissions representatives scheduled during the academic day and for evening programs.
  • Coordinate fall and spring visits to Christopher Columbus with admission representatives.
  • Assist the Director of College & Career Guidance in hosting the College Bootcamp in August and the College Fair each Fall.
  • Commits to professional growth by attending conferences and workshops, visiting college and university campuses, and maintaining membership in regional and national organizations.
  • Awareness of issues and trends in college admission, higher education, and testing.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with parents, faculty, counselors, and administrators and support the objectives, goals, and mission of the school.
  • Performs other duties as may be deemed necessary for the efficient operation of the College & Career Guidance Department.

  • Enthusiasm for working with and motivating high school students.
  • Effective communicator, both verbally and in writing, to internal and external constituencies.
  • Comfortability with technology and staying informed of emerging technologies.
  • A strong work ethic, adaptability, flexibility, strong problem-solving, planning, organizational, and time management skills, enthusiasm for working in a thriving school setting, and maturity will be highly valued in this position.
  • Demonstrates the ability to excel in a dynamic, collaborative, and innovation-driven office environment by effectively managing multiple projects, meeting critical deadlines, and adapting with flexibility, maturity, and perseverance while balancing competing priorities.
  • Ability to attend meetings outside the typical school day, including before and after the school day, in the evening, and sometimes on weekends for special events.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree from a college or university is required; a Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in college counseling and/or in a selective college’s admission office.
