About

I grew up in Kingsport, TN. I earned an Bachelors Degree with Honors from Agnes Scott College in 1968.  In 1971, I earned an M.A.T. at UNC-CH; and in 1988, I finished my Ed.S. Degree with a 4.0 from Georgia State University.

I was an educator for 46 years--teaching social studies for 3 years (1968-1971) at John T. Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC. The city experienced a lot of racial unrest during that period, and three of the Wilmington Ten were in my third period history class in 1971.  They were finally pardoned with innocence in 2012 but spent years in prison. From 1971 through 1974, I taught 6th grade at Burton Elementary School, an inner city school, in Durham, NC. My 35 students' reading abilities ranged from pre-kindergarten to ninth grade (only two students). From 1974-1978, I taught fifth grade in the Aldine Independent School District for three years and first grade for one year.  From 1984 to 1988, I taught social studies at Lakeshore High School in Fulton County and LOVED every minute of being back on the high school level with those precious young people!! I'm still in touch with many of them today.  I spent 1988-1989 at Westlake High school (the district had closed Lakeshore), making a total of 15 years in public schools, which were incredibly important and informative in shaping my understanding and growth personally and professionally.

From 1989 to 2020, I was on the faculty at The Westminster Schools in Atlanta where I taught history from 1989-2015 and thoroughly enjoyed teaching that subject and working with those young people!  In 1992, I became one of the two college counselors there (they now have five!) and spent 28 years doing that work.  I had an amazing experience there, served on the SACAC Board, starting in 1997; joined SACAC that year andwas president of the organization in 2004-2005. I served on the NACAC Board as a Director from 2008-2011.  I served on the ACCIS Board of Trustees from 2012-2015.  In 2016, I became President of NACAC and served on that Board from 2015-2018. I am still active both in SACAC and NACAC.  In 2020, I retired from Westminster, ending a career that I found incredibly meaningful.

I have been married to John Beane, who had both a Bachelors and Masters Degree from UNC-CH ad was a Spanish teacher and principal in Wilmington before going to law school in 1971 at Duke. He spent 41 years as an attorney in Houston, Tx; Asheville, NC; and Atlanta GA.  We have one daughter, Kathryn who will be married this fall (2024) to the love of her life, Aaron Chamberlain. We also have a precious English Cream Golden Retriever, Wyatt, whom we love dearly! Currently, I am chair of the Board of Directors of Theological Horizons at UVA, serve on the Cathedral of St. Philip Preschool Board of Directors, and am on the Cathedral Scholars Committee at St. Philips.  I grew up in the Presbyterian Church and have been a member of the Episcopal Church since 1978. I also do volunteer work with SACAC and stay active in NACAC too.  It has been an incredible honor to work in this profession, and I am thankful that I can still be active in a field that has meant so much to me.
