Wellness...Use the Summer, restore you!

Summer has arrived, and with summer comes a period of closed laptops, out of office messages for some, quiet offices, or a race to enrolling the freshmen class before Fall. No matter what your summer working arrangement may be, we have curated some summer wellness tips for both sides of the desk.

Ideas for College Admissions Professionals to Maximize Wellness During Summer:

1. Use the airline, hotel, and rental car loyalty points you have accumulated during travel seasons to enjoy a relaxing vacation.

2. Enjoy a new fitness hobby –perhaps something outdoors (ex- swimming, beach yoga, pickle-ball).

3. Instead of reading college applications, immerse yourself in a good book from a favorite author or literary genre.

4. Expand your skills via an online course (pro-tip: check out what NACAC has to offer)

Ideas for School Counseling Professionals to Maximize Wellness During Summer:

1. Set the tone for your time away (whether it is two days or two months) with a good “out of office” message. Taking time for yourself sets a strong example for our students.

2. Make a “to-do” list of things you want to do for yourself this summer…and hold yourself accountable just as you would a work list. This list can include time on the couch doing absolutely nothing.

3. Reconnect with your physical self. It doesn’t have to be a punishing exercise but something that feels good and is enjoyable (swimming, hiking, yoga, cycling, etc.)

4. If you are writing letters of recommendation during the summer, designate a definitive time and a space to write your letters and stick to it so that writing does not consume your whole summer. You can do the same for essay reviewing.

5. If you are a 10-month or 11-month employee, try structuring your time to make the most out of your summer. Those 30 to 60 days go by fast!

Bonus for both sides: take a look at the 2026-2027 calendar and map out when you want to use your vacation time. Put it on the calendar now!

So, how will you spend your summer? We want to hear from you!  If you have additional tips, feel free to write to us on Instagram to share them with the rest of SACAC!
